a resource for carers

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I live in London and have been told that I can get travel concessions is this correct?

Yes there are provided that you meet the ‘disability requirements’. The following websites will help: www.taxicard.org.uk www.freedompass.org www.direct.gov.uk (this one will give information on the blue badge scheme and rail and bus concessions). www.hammerout.co.uk also gives advice on travel in London.

Q. How do I find out about Radar keys for using the locked disabled toilets around the country?

If you go to www.radar-shop.org.uk it tells you how to apply for a key and then you will get a list of 7000 toilets around the UK that you can use. There is a small charge for this service. You can also go to www.directenquiries.com which will tell you where there are accessible toilets around the country, which don’t need a key but will take wheelchairs.

Q. Is there a good website that will explain in layman’s language all about brain tumour types, treatment and what research is being conducted at the moment?

There is a very good site useful for both carers and patients, which covers all these areas and more and is easy to use and understand. I would warn you though that there is a blunt section on statistics and outcomes which you or your patient may want to think carefully about before reading. www.cancerhelp.org.uk. A number of the sites mentioned on this website also have comprehensive sections on tumours and treatments but they have not been singled out on this site as www.carersandbraintumours.org is aimed at providing practical information and sources of help for carers. www.swshcn.nhs.uk/cancer_info also has a very good general information section on tumours, treatments and links to other resources which are very helpful.
